Shipping a barrel (un tanque) is one of the most popular ways Dominican families send goods between the Dominican Republic and the United States. A barrel holds a lot, it's sturdy, and it's easy to seal and label.
But what you put inside matters. The right items clear customs smoothly; the wrong ones can cause delays, extra inspections, or items being taken out. Here's a practical guide to what to pack, what to leave home, and how to pack it.
Items that usually ship well in a barrel
- Clothing, shoes and linens.
- Towels, sheets and blankets (great for padding, too).
- Non-perishable, sealed and labeled packaged foods such as rice, beans, pasta, canned goods, coffee and seasonings in factory packaging.
- Personal care and household items: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, detergent (non-aerosol and sealed tight).
- School supplies, books and toys.
- Small kitchenware like pots, pans, plates and utensils.
- Small electronics in their boxes, with batteries removed where possible.
Items to leave out
- Flammable or hazardous items: aerosol cans, lighter fluid, gasoline, paint, bleach, fireworks and matches.
- Weapons, ammunition and anything that looks like one.
- Cash, checks, jewelry and important documents (keep these with you).
- Fresh fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds and soil.
- Fresh, frozen or homemade meat, cheese and dairy.
- Anything perishable or unsealed that can leak or spoil.
- Prescription medicines (carry personal medicines with you in the original labeled bottle instead).
Items that may be restricted or taxed
Alcohol, cigars and tobacco, large quantities of the same item (which can look commercial), new electronics, and anything you plan to resell can be subject to duties, limits or extra paperwork on either side. Tell us what you're shipping when you request a quote and we'll tell you what to expect before the barrel is sealed.
How to pack a barrel the right way
1. Use a sturdy fiber or plastic barrel with a locking lid.
2. Put heavy items on the bottom and light items on top.
3. Fill every gap with clothing or towels so nothing shifts.
4. Bag liquids in zip-top bags and tape the caps.
5. Make a simple packing list (item, quantity, approximate value). You'll need it for customs.
6. Seal the lid and label the barrel with the sender and receiver names, addresses and phone numbers on two sides.
