FCL vs LCL: which ocean freight option saves you more?

Full container or consolidated? A simple rule of thumb, plus the hidden costs that change the math for Caribbean shipments.

The 15 CBM rule of thumb

LCL is priced per cubic meter (CBM), while FCL is a flat rate per container. Under roughly 15 CBM, LCL is usually cheaper. Above that, a 20′ container (about 28–33 CBM usable) often costs the same or less — and your cargo is not handled alongside anyone else’s.

Costs beyond the freight rate

When comparing quotes, look at:

  • Destination unstuffing and warehouse fees for LCL
  • Extra transit days for consolidation and deconsolidation
  • Risk of delays if another shipper’s cargo in the same box is inspected
  • Inland trucking from the port to your door

Our recommendation

For regular palletized shipments under 10 CBM, LCL from the US is hard to beat. For time-sensitive, high-value or larger loads, FCL is safer and more predictable. We will quote both so you can compare.
